The Texts Are Getting Sneaky: A Follower’s Story About Smishing
Today’s post comes directly from a conversation with a follower of my page. They recently reached out to me with a very real and increasingly common issue: they’ve been receiving a few smishing texts lately.
For those unfamiliar, smishing is phishing via SMS (text message). These aren’t just random “you’ve won a prize” texts anymore; they’re incredibly convincing, often impersonating trusted services like banks, delivery companies, or even your favorite streaming service. They’ll use urgency or fear to get you to click a link that looks legitimate but is designed to steal your information.
The Anatomy of a Smishing Scam:
• Impersonation: The texts look like they’re from a real, recognizable company. They may even use the company’s name in the message.
• Urgency/Threats: They create a sense of panic. “Your account has been locked,” “There’s a problem with your delivery,” or “Urgent action required on your credit card.”
• Malicious Link: The text includes a link that appears innocent. However, it directs you to a fake website where you’re prompted to enter your password, credit card number, or other personal details.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Family:
1. Stop and Think: Before you click any link, ask yourself if the message is expected. Did you just order something? Is this how your bank normally communicates with you?
2. Verify, Don’t Click: If you get a suspicious text from a company, don’t click the link. Instead, open your browser and go directly to that company’s official website or app. Log in there to check for any alerts.
3. Use Official Channels: If a text asks you to call a number, ignore it. Find the company’s official customer service number on their website and call that instead.
4. Block and Delete: Block the number immediately and delete the text. Do not reply, as this confirms to the scammer that your number is active.

¡Ojo! Un Seguidor nos Cuenta Sobre Mensajes de Texto Sospechosos (Smishing) 📱
¡Hola a todos! 👋 Quisiera compartir una historia que llegó de uno de mis seguidores. Un seguidor empezó a recibir mensajes de texto muy sospechosos, ¡y es un gran recordatorio para que todos estemos alerta! “¡Muchas gracias por enviarme esto! Hiciste exactamente lo correcto al no hacer click y contactarme”.
Últimamente, los estafadores no solo envían correos electrónicos; también nos están enviando mensajes de texto, (smishing/phishing por SMS). Estos mensajes son CADA VEZ MAS RELEVANTES imitando a tu banco, a una empresa de envíos o a una tienda que te gusta. Crean pánico o urgencia para que hagas click en un enlace antes de que te dé tiempo a pensar.
Cómo Identificar una Estafa de Smishing:
• ¿Quién lo envía realmente? El mensaje parecerá ser de una empresa real, pero el número podría ser extraño o el tono simplemente no cuadra.
• La Vibra de “¡Date Prisa!”: Cuidado con mensajes que dicen cosas como “Tu cuenta ha sido bloqueada”, “Tu paquete tiene un problema, haz click aquí” o “¡Acción inmediata requerida!”.
• El Enlace es la Trampa: Siempre hay un enlace. Puede parecer inofensivo, pero te lleva a una página web falsa diseñada para robar tus contraseñas o números de tarjeta de crédito.
Consejos Rápidos para Protegerte (y a tu Familia):
1. ¡Para y Piensa! 🛑 ¡No hagas click! Pregúntate si esperabas este mensaje. ¿Tiene sentido?
2. ¡Verifica, No Hagas Click! Si recibes un mensaje sospechoso de una empresa, no hagas click en el enlace. Ve directamente al sitio web oficial de esa empresa para buscar alertas reales.
3. ¡Borra y Bloquea! Lo mejor es bloquear el número y borrar el mensaje de inmediato. No respondas, ¡eso solo les dice que tu número está activo!!
